Epic Snake Catcher Experience
by Nat, SEQ Snake Catchers located in Brisbane
It was a warm day, and funnily enough, I was about to leave home to pick up my new pet snake. A beautiful platinum spotted python.
Just as I was about to get on the road, I received a call from a lady in Jimboomba about a large snake in her shed which she would like me to catch and relocate.
I did not realise at the time, that this was going to be what I can only describe as… ..an EPIC snake catcher experience.
But was I really prepared for what was about to transpire in my early career as a snake catcher?
Once I hung up the phone, I thought to myself, ‘I can fit this in, scoot by on the way to the pet shop’. My Mum was joining me on the drive and so by default was joining me on the snake catch callout as well.
And…. it was a good thing she was there. As we drove up to the property and entered the shed that the snake was residing in, I knew we were going to see a python, but I had no idea how big!!
The lady pointed to an area behind some scaffolding where the snake was last seen ‘resting’. As we started to move the scaffolding, I saw the ‘gigantic’ snake, my first thought was ‘I was never trained to catch dinosaurs’. The goliath sized snake would turn out to be over 3m long and FAT. It had most likely had eaten a possum a few days prior to capture.
My old lady helped me move the scaffolds one by one until the big fella decided he had seen enough and tried to slither away. Even if big fella snake had managed to get away from this ‘experienced snake catcher, I don’t know where he thought he could hide.
I grabbed the end of his tail and tried to reel him in as my mum continued to move scaffolds, at a quicker pace now.
The 3m of the giant snake intertwined himself around every object making it a nightmare to get the snake into the open so that I could catch and release.
The entire time, while I was trying to get the snake out, I kept my eyes on the snake’s head, which to me, looked more like a crocodile’s head than a snakehead!
Once this brave snake catcher finally had big fella snake out in the open, the epically huge snake became subdued very quickly, and boy was he a sight to behold.
Big fella snake was all muscle with flat out power, his belly full of possum, eyes were milky, and his body was getting ready for a shed which would be an awesome prize to keep on my wall at home.
Poor big fell snake had scars on his body, likely from mating season brawls with other males or even female.
After accessing him and making sure all was OK from our snake catching efforts, we released him into nearby bushland where he begrudgingly slithered into the undergrowth, no doubt tired from his ordeal.
People often think big snakes translate to hard or scary snake catcher callouts, but this is untrue. The bigger the snake, the harder it is for it to escape and makes it easier for snake catchers to locate.
Yes, the potential bites are far worse, but what is all the training we snake catchers do to avoid being bitten by snakes.
